Endangered Species Chocolate goes along for the ride

INDIANAPOLIS – By participating in NuRide, an online ridesharing community, Endangered Species Chocolate helped reward commuters for reducing traffic congestion throughout the US in 2007.

NuRide helps connect commuters and rewards them for sharing rides. Members earn points by logging ride shares online and can redeem points with local and national sponsors. Endangered Species Chocolate offers 20% off at chocolatebar.com in return for 800 points, or eight ride shares. In 2007, more than 23,000 NuRide members shared more than 400,000 trips resulting in:

  • 12,525,029 fewer miles traveled – that’s over 55 trips to the moon!
  • 501,001 gallons of gas saved - that’s 55 tanker trucks!
  • 5,636 tons of emissions prevented – that’s equivalent to planting 10,000 trees!

“Our CEO, Wayne, dreams of a biodiesel vehicle that runs on chocolate, but we’ll start with helping encourage commuters to share rides,” says Renee Sweany, marketing representative for Endangered Species Chocolate. “Carpooling and hybrid cars are already part of our corporate culture, so NuRide was a natural fit.”

The average commute for NuRide members redeeming points with Endangered Species Chocolate was 32.2 miles one-way in 2007. The average miles-per-gallon was 21.6. That’s 33 pounds of CO2 per trip reduced from the atmosphere!

NuRide currently offers commuter rewards in Connecticut, Hampton Rds, VA, Houston, TX, Minneapolis/St Paul, MN, New York metro, and Washington metro, with plans for growth in 2008. Local organizations like Central Indiana Commuter Services (www.centralincommuter.net) help connect commuters in the Indianapolis area.
