Earth Day starts at home for Endangered Species Chocolate
INDIANAPOLIS – To commemorate Earth Day, Endangered Species Chocolate reflects on simple facility-based successes that make a lasting, positive impact on the environment. Endangered Species Chocolate concentrates efforts on honing manufacturing processes to further green up its green company in 2009.
“It has become painfully clear to all of us, that taking steps like these is the only way we will effect positive global climate relief for our planet,” says Bryan Fuller, Director of Operations for Endangered Species Chocolate.
Committed to achieving a lower carbon footprint, Endangered Species Chocolate is seeking strategic ways to conserve natural resources during its manufacturing processes. Making eco-centric decisions is a vital objective at Endangered Species Chocolate, ensuring a healthy, efficient and productive work environment, Earth Day and beyond.
- Smart water usage. Investment in a water-efficient washing machine is reducing Endangered Species Chocolate’s daily water usage from 500 gallons/day to 40 gallons/day.
- Energy conservation. Endangered Species Chocolate trimmed natural gas usage by 7% and cut electric use by 27%. The addition of energy efficient equipment and elimination of unnecessary lighting and electric panels aids in this power reduction. Cultivating an office-wide culture supporting conservation rallies its employees to help further reduce power use.
- Waste reduction. By refining key manufacturing processes, Endangered Species Chocolate shaved daily chocolate waste from approximately 13% to 2%. Additionally, efficient tank plumbing and thoughtful production scheduling allows Endangered Species Chocolate to achieve a 50% reduction in chocolate waste during changeover purges. Thanks to label design improvements, daily paper label waste has dropped from 10% to an impressively low <2%!
- Eco-minded choices. Supporting its mission to promote sustainability, Endangered Species Chocolate prints its chocolate bar labels on Forest Stewardship Council certified paper that contains 30% post-consumer waste. Obsolete labels are repurposed as packing materials for Endangered Species Chocolate parcel shipments. Office spaces at Endangered Species Chocolate are cleaned with Green Seal™ certified natural cleaners sourced from JohnsonDiversey, a participant in World Wildlife Fund’s Climate Saver program.
