Selected for its endangered classification, there is an estimated population of 2,500 mature red pandas living in their natural habitat. Scientifically known as Ailurus fulgens, they are native to the Himalayas in Nepal and China. Major threats to red pandas include habitat loss and fragmentation, food specialization needs and poaching.

Mostly herbivorous, bamboo is the primary food source for red pandas. They also eat berries, mushrooms, roots, nuts, grasses, and occasionally eggs, insects and small rodents and birds. The soft, reddish-brown, ring-tailed mammals tend to be solitary, only seeking companionship for mating. Red pandas are crepuscular, meaning they are most active at dawn or dusk.
