The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund

The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund is the world’s largest and longest-running organization dedicated entirely to gorilla conservation. Founded by Dian Fossey in 1967, the Fossey Fund protects endangered gorillas in Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo every day, while also studying how they live, training future scientists and conservationists in Africa, and helping local communities through education and livelihoods programs.

Thanks to the protection efforts started by Dian Fossey, mountain gorillas are now the only wild ape whose numbers are increasing. And through the expansion of our work to eastern Congo, and the critically endangered Grauer’s gorillas, which have declined by 80% over the last twenty years, are being saved.

Dian Fossey pioneering research changed the way the world viewed gorillas. The Fossey Fund continues her work, studying all aspects of gorilla biology and contributing enormously to what is scientifically known about gorillas. Because healthy gorilla populations depend on healthy ecosystems, they also study the larger biodiversity of the region, with particular focus on important indicator species like amphibians and birds.

But the Fossey Fund also believes that for gorillas and all conservation to thrive, people must thrive too. That’s why the Fund helps human communities living near gorilla habitat, through education, food and water security projects, and livelihood initiatives.

Saving endangered species like gorillas takes a global effort. We are grateful that Endangered Species Chocolate partners with organizations like the Fossey Fund to carry out this important conservation work.
